The following resources provide you with public domain images including photographs, illustrations, clip art, as well as photo search engines. These resources will help you find the perfect image to highlight your story. This selection of image resources are offered for free but please be sure to read any user restrictions before publishing.

US Government Photos and Graphics

A portal to U.S. Government images and photos. Includes links to image rich government sites such as the Library of Congress, branches of the military, the U.S. Mint and the National Park Service. A wide range of images are available, from historical baseball featured in the Spalding Base Ball Guides to satellite images taken by the Landsat-7. "Most of these images and graphics are available for use in the public domain, and they may be used and reproduced without permission or fee. However, some images may be protected by license."

New York Public Library Digital Gallery

Hundreds of thousands of digital images from the collections of the New York Public Library. Illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs and lllustrated books are just some of the material that has been digitized. Images may be freely downloaded for personal, research and study purposes. There are usage fees for commercial use of images.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum

Thousands of on-line, copyright free photographs of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the Great Depression and the New Deal, and World War II. Find images of WPA (Works Progress Administration) projects, World War II training camp maneuvers and shipbuilding and hundreds of photos of Franklin Roosevelt.  Photographs can be easily downloaded or print copies can be ordered for a fee. 

Public Domain Pictures.net

A repository for free public domain, high resolution photographs.  Can be used for personal or commercial use (note commercial use caution on site).  Photos are arranged by broad categories - animals, architecture, flowers, food, landscape, etc. and keyword searching capability is also available.

Public Domain Photos

Over 2000 photographs that are advertised on the site as "100% free for use" including for commercial redistribution and alteration.  Photographs are arranged by categories such as arts, people, objects, technology, transportation, nature, sports, etc.

Burningwell.org

Repository of public domain photographs donated by photographers from around the world.  As stated on the site, "You are free to download, copy and use the photos you find here for any purpose".  You can browse albums of images or search by keyword.  You can also donate your own images to the BurningWell repository.

PD photo

Database of thousands of public domain stock photographs that may be used for both personal and commercial users.   Each photo has a license that clearly states allowable uses of image. According to the site, "unless something is clearly marked as being something other than public domain, you can assume it is free to use".  If you wish to use the image for commercial uses, be aware that model releases were not obtained.  Can search for photos by category or keyword.

Thousands of photographs and clipart that are free for both personal and commercial use.  Arranged by categories such as buildings, flowers, food, landscapes, people, etc.  Can also be searched by keyword.

Google Books

Millions of books and historical documents that have been scanned by Google.  Keyword searchable. Includes both copyrighted and public domain books.  Can be used as a resource for diagrams and illustration.  Note that only public domain, out-of-copyright books, can be downloaded.

Project Gutenberg

Over 25,000 public domain books in several languages.  You can browse by author, title, language or recently posted as well as search by author, title, language or words in the full text of the ebook.  Source for images as well as text as Illustrations are included in many of the books.

CIA World Factbook

US government profiles of countries and territories around the world prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency.  Includes information on geography, people, government, transportation, economy, communications, transportation, military and transnational issues.  A special section, Flags of the World, features color images of the countries' flags.  With the exception of the official seal of the CIA which may not be copied without permission, the Factbook is in the public domain and may be copied freely.

A collection of over 25,000 clip art images in the public domain. No registration is required.  Collection is categorized into specific categories such as animals - dogs, holiday - Thanksgiving, people - children, toys, weather, wedding, zodiac, etc.  Collection can also be searched by keyword.

Open Clip Art Library

Archive of user contributed clip art that can be freely used.  The clipart is stored is SVG (scalable vector graphics) format.  Collection is browseable using tags.  Register in order to add to the collection. 

WP Clipart

Collection of high-quality public domain images specifically designed for use in word processors and optimized for printing on inkjet printers.  Thousands of color graphic clips, illustrations, photographs and black and white line art.  The majority of the images are in  PNG format but can be converted on the site to jpg formats of various sizes.  Instructions are provided for integration into OpenOffice.  You can browse the collection by category or search by keyword.
